Climate

Lake County climate is characterized by cold winters and warm summers with a relatively short growing season of around 100 days. Precipitation ranges from 8 to 10 inches in the lower basins, 12 to 16 inches in some mountain valleys, and 16 to 25 inches in the forested uplands. Most of the precipitation falls as snow. Snowfall ranges from about 20 inches annually, in the basins, to over 70 inches in the mountains. Precipitation in the summer months typically comes as thundershowers. Typical temperatures are:

Cold, snowy winters and warm, dry summers characterize Klamath County's climate. About half of the annual precipitation occurs from November through January. Only 5% occurs from July to September. The county is subject to residual precipitation from the uplifting of storms passing over the Cascade Range. The western part of the county receives between 25 and 50 inches of precipitation annually. The eastern part of the county receives 15 to 30 inches. Average snowfall ranges from 41 inches at the Klamath Falls weather station to as much as 600 inches (50 feet!) at the highest elevations. The record snowfall at Crater Lake National Park was 879 inches (73 feet) during the winter of '32 and '33.
